a hit is when you hit the ball and get on base.

one could make contact with the ball, but if the player was thrown out at first then it wasn't a "hit".

and if you walk someone to first, it's still not a hit.

you can knock the ball to the outfield wall, but if it's caught its an out, not a hit.
